With more than 32 years of experience in adult cardiac surgery, (Adj) Professor Theo Kofidis has dedicated his career to advancing minimally invasive cardiac surgery through clinical practice, research and innovation. His clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of adult cardiac surgery, including coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve repair and replacement, aortic surgery, heart failure surgery, minimally invasive, robotic and hybrid cardiac procedures.
Alongside his clinical practice, (Adj) Professor Theo Kofidis has contributed to the development of minimally invasive cardiac surgery techniques, heart valve technologies and clinical programmes. Driven by this commitment, he founded Kardia Pte Ltd to support the research and development of technologies for minimally invasive cardiac surgery and heart valve interventions.
Over the past decade, he has contributed to the establishment of minimally invasive cardiac surgery programmes, cardiovascular surgical research initiatives and collaborative projects with the National University Health System (NUHS), academic institutions and medical technology partners. His work continues to support the advancement of cardiac surgery through research, education and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Throughout his career, (Adj) Professor Theo Kofidis has received recognition from international professional organisations for his contributions to cardiac surgery, research and surgical education, including the European Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, The Onassis Heart Center, The Hellenic Cardiology Society (Lifetime Achievement Award), and the Indian Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (Lifetime Achievement Award).
He is a Fellow of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), Chairman of the Education Committee of the Asian Society for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (ASCVTS), and Chairman of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Chapter of the Singapore Cardiac Society. Through these professional appointments, he contributes to surgical education and the advancement of cardiothoracic surgery within the international medical community.
(Adj) Professor Theo Kofidis serves as a consultant and advisory board member to medical technology companies, including Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, Abbott and LivaNova. He is also the author of a QR-code-based textbook on minimally invasive cardiac surgery, published by Taylor & Francis/CRC Press, which introduced the Read-Scan-Watch educational concept.
(Adj) Professor Theo Kofidis completed his surgical training in Germany and the United States, including Rochester, the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Hannover Medical School, and Stanford University. Since then, he has continued to build on this foundation through clinical practice, research and academic collaboration.
In addition to his clinical work, he is actively involved in surgical education as a lecturer, faculty member and proctor for professional organisations, scientific meetings and educational programmes. He has participated in workshops and training initiatives for cardiac surgeons in minimally invasive cardiac surgery and has lectured for organisations including the American Medical Association, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Bill Gates Research Institute.
Outside of medicine, (Adj) Professor Theo Kofidis enjoys flying, travelling, photography, fitness and reading. He is married to Persephone and has a daughter, Danai.
